I receive messages from frustrated choir directors pretty frequently.

(Maybe you’re one of them.)

You really want the best for your ministry. And you work hard.

But unfortunately, at times you meet challenges that make it difficult for you to do your job well.

Here are a few common challenges I hear about:

“The pastoral and/or lay leadership isn’t as supportive as it could be.”

“My church lacks financial resources.”

“Our parish doesn’t support the choral arts.”

“My church is dwindling, therefore my choir can’t grow!”

“Many folks in my area are heading down the road to that new modern worship experience. They don’t care about traditional worship, let alone the choir.”

Now, maybe you’re reading this list and thinking, “Chris, I’m really not facing any of these challenges.”


I pray that you continue to be blessed in your ministry and never have to face ANY of these challenges.

Having said this, ALL of us face challenges at some point. They may not be same the challenges listed above, but they are still challenges.

One of the biggest problems I hear about is a lack of choir growth.

I recently received an email from a very frustrated choir director who listed most of the challenges above plus a few more as to why his choir isn’t growing.

And I bet he’s not the only frustrated choir director reading my emails.

I’ve been there.

And chances are you’ve been there too.

And man, it can be debilitating.

Facing challenges can easily make you a pessimist.

But here’s the thing –

You must possess the RIGHT mindset if you want your choir to grow, let alone experience any type of growth in your ministry.


Philippians 4:6-8 says, 

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

Pessimistically dwelling on obstacles stops you from appreciating the blessings that surround you and binds you to a narrow-minded and non-solution-oriented mindset.

While focussing on the blessings in your life (in your ministry) shifts your perspective to the positive and allows you to be solution-oriented when facing obstacles instead of allowing the obstacles to control you.

But it’s a muscle.

You have to work it.

It takes practice (something we musicians are quite used to, hopefully!)

It’s simple!

And it sounds easy.

But it’s not easy.

You have to work that “muscle” to shift to the positive every time you feel yourself shifting to a negative frame of mind.

So, why do you have to possess the RIGHT mindset to experience choral growth?

Because a negative mindset destines you and your ministry to a stagnant state.

It’s much easier to say, “Well, my congregation doesn’t appreciate the choral arts, therefore we can’t grow.”

As opposed to a solution-oriented statement, such as, “My parish doesn’t appreciate the choral arts, therefore I have to educate them through a concert series on the validity and importance of the art form.”

You become solution-oriented and able to move in the right direction 😉

So, I hope this post doesn’t come across as preachy.

That’s not my intent.

I’m not trying to discount the challenges and obstacles you face.

Rather, I want to encourage you and give you a formula to free your pessimistic mindset so that you can lead your ministry (and your choir) in the fullness of God’s will and plan!

So be encouraged, friend!
